  19. <p>     During the past few years, animal activism has attracted Kim
  20. Basinger, Christy Turlington and other glamorously thin personalities.
  21. So it may make sense that newly sveltish TV talk-show host RICKI
  22. LAKE has joined the cause. Last week Lake and other members
  23. of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals raided Karl Lagerfeld's
  24. Manhattan offices to denounce the designer's use of leather
  25. and fur. They blared, "Karl kills!" and Lake wound up arrested.
  26. The overlap of her well-publicized protest with the November
  27. ratings sweeps was pure coincidence, she said.

  29. <p>     A Nice Girl's Fatal Heat
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     Little in her happy-family, Catholic-school upbringing could
  32. have readied LINDA FIORENTINO for her role as one of film's
  33. most vicious femmes fatales. As a murderous telemarketer in
  34. The Last Seduction, Fiorentino degrades men with a wickedness
  35. that has won raves even from auteur-of-the-moment Quentin Tarantino.
  36. Fiorentino, 34, says she knew no women evil enough to base her
  37. character on, so "I tapped into what I know about ruthless men."
  38. Next she stars in the thriller Jade, and she hopes to work with
  39. Martin Scorsese and Alan Rudolph. "If they were directing the
  40. yellow pages I'd do it," she says.

  42. <p>     Driving Miss Rosie Straight to a Prenuptial Agreement

  44. <p>     Time heals emotional wounds, but apparently so do burly chauffeurs.
  45. Last April, right in the midst of her tiringly raucous breakup
  46. with husband Tom, ROSEANNE ARNOLD hired a 240-lb. driver and
  47. bodyguard. By summertime, Roseanne, 41, and former mechanic
  48. BEN THOMAS, 28, were vacationing in Tuscany not as mistress
  49. and servant but as new lovebirds. Last week Roseanne, who will
  50. be divorced from Arnold next month, announced that she and Thomas
  51. will marry next year on Valentine's Day.

  55. <p>     It is a man of great temerity who challenges the exceedingly
  56. muscular SYLVESTER STALLONE. But at a recent party in England
  57. hosted by ELTON JOHN, RICHARD GERE reportedly accused Stallone
  58. of becoming too friendly with his wife CINDY CRAWFORD. The gods
  59. seemed to be smiling on the graying, comparatively slight Mr.
  60. Gere: Sly ignored him.

  62. <p>     Editors are comparing it to The Bridges of Madison County, but
  63. The Horse Whisperer promises more than a conventional middle-aged-guy-meets-melancholy-housewife
  64. plot. It is a love story about a man who tames wild horses by
  65. talking to them. The film rights to the book by British journalist
  66. NICHOLAS EVANS were recently bought by ROBERT REDFORD for $2
  67. million. Last week the U.S. publishing rights went for $3.15
  68. million--a record for a first novel. And how does the book
  69. end? No one knows. Evans hasn't finished it yet.
